The Versailles-Washington system was intended to strengthen the postwar division of the world and was aimed not only against the defeated countries but also against the Soviet state and national liberation movements in colonies and dependent countries. The Treaty of Versailles (1919) and the closely related treaties of Saint-Germain (1919), Neuilly (1919), Trianon (1920), and Sèvres (1920), the agreements reached at the Washington Conference of 1921-22, and others formed the basis of the Versailles-Washington system in Europe. The Versailles-Washington system was not able to obliterate the contradictions between the imperialist powers. With the beginning of World War II, the Versailles-Washington system completely collapsed.
