On older, high-end hardware (4770k + R9 Fury) Firefox is undoubtedly the way to go; it handles 4K60 with nary a hitch. On the other hand, Edge only allows me to select up to 1080p60, uses an inferior codec (avc vs vp9), and while it also is able to play back smoothly, that hardly matters given the other shortcomings.
On newer, low-end hardware (N3350) Edge takes the crown instead, and by an even greater margin. While Edge is able to playback 4K60 videos using vp9 absolutely flawlessly, this time it's Firefox who is unable to even run 1080p60 smoothly, and in some videos at least will drop to the avc codec.
Conclusion
This is incredibly stupid! For anyone with my CPU, if you want to watch YouTube, you either use Edge on Windows, or try Linux and mess with some crazy driver stuff.
